The Last Day of Winter 2011

We are glad to see the last day of winter--so glad. This has not been a severe winter by any measure, but we seem unusually eager this time around for spring to set in, possibly because we both have big plans for spring and summer. The newly arrived Red-winged Blackbirds are especially vocal this morning, as is a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers. And the Bluebirds have broadcast themselves almost everywhere we look. Their odd calls are one of the most welcome sounds of spring here.

I walked down to the marsh and river this morning and found that the marsh has thawed some but refrozen. The ice in our trail is especially slippery because the snow compacted where we walk through on snow shoes and will be the last ice to melt. And the river is up to the bridge's belly. Snow melt and rain mingle to be frozen into new formations and patterns, each little puddle or kettle a new study in the old chaos through which life navigated its way to this place. Hoka hey.
