Snakes and Marigolds
Today surprised us with the first snakes. Even though the wind from the northeast is making the 47 degrees feel truly chilly, these two garter snakes were apparently flitterpated enough to take their chances. Just like the snakes, the marsh marigolds are raising their heads above ground for the first time this year.
The Cooper's hawk that unfortunately killed itself against our porch while going after a dove is now with a taxidermist, whom I also gave a copy of Audubon's "Winter Hawk" to imitate. If you'll look at Plate 71 of Audubon's "Birds of America," you can see approximately the posture Coop will have for the rest of his days, minus the bullfrog.
By an odd (and expensive) coincidence, Jezebel shook a large mink to death a couple of days ago. Now that mink is also with a taxidermist. And I am promising the tolerant and patient Alison that our house will not become a natural history museum.
