Crawling Under Over Arching
The short-tailed shrew is nearly blind so cannot see a rainbow. How many short-tailed shrews could you line up between the two ends of a rainbow? As the autumn colors begin to appear, do you think that the rainbow doubles itself to remind us of who is king of color drama?
We had some especially fine rainbows recently, with one of them bearing down so hard on its southern arm that it seemed to enflame the trees it touched.
Gray foxes continue to appear with an unprecedented frequency, and the night before bow season began, the does gathered round the former salt lick as if to say so long for a while. Irony is everywhere. And on the first morning of bow season, some yahoos over by the red barn at 6:15 a.m. called and whistled for their dog--Yes, DOG. Somebody apparently brought along a dog for the opening day of bow season, a dog they had to call and whistle for for a good ten minutes. So Josh and I saw no deer that morning, but things are changing. There will be more to report soon. In the meantime, watch this largest of North American shrews doing its hunting.
